Why Emotional Intelligence Becomes More Important as AI Gets Better

Artificial intelligence can analyse information faster than any management team.

It can prepare scenarios, identify patterns, summarise documents and challenge assumptions.

Its capabilities will continue to improve.

That does not make human leadership less important.

It changes where human leadership creates value.

Information is becoming abundant

Historically, seniority often came with privileged access to information.

That advantage is disappearing.

Knowledge can increasingly be retrieved, compared and synthesised almost instantly.

But information and leadership are not the same thing.

Organisations do not resist change because they lack another PowerPoint.

Teams do not lose trust because they need another data set.

And difficult conversations do not become easier because an algorithm has identified the optimal answer.

Leadership happens between people

Executives still need to sense when a management team is aligned only superficially.

They need to recognise resistance that is not being expressed openly.

They need to give difficult feedback, manage conflict, create psychological safety and remain composed when the pressure rises.

Those capabilities fall under a broad concept we often underestimate: emotional intelligence.

It includes self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, assertiveness, interpersonal relationships and the ability to understand what a situation requires.

None of this means leaders should become softer or less demanding.

Quite the opposite.

High emotional intelligence can make difficult leadership more effective because expectations and consequences can be communicated clearly without unnecessarily damaging trust.

AI raises the standard for human leadership

When technology becomes better at producing information, human leaders need to become better at interpretation, connection and mobilisation.

That is why we expect emotional intelligence to become more important rather than less.

The leaders who stand out will not compete with AI at processing data.

They will know how to use technology while doing what technology cannot easily replace: creating commitment between human beings.
