International Search: Global Reach Is Not Enough

Finding executives internationally has never looked easier.

LinkedIn is global. Databases are global. Video interviews remove distance. AI can identify names across markets in seconds.

So why does international Executive Search remain difficult?

Because access is not the same as understanding.

A candidate market is local

Titles do not mean exactly the same thing in every country.

Compensation structures differ.

Notice periods differ.

Candidate expectations differ.

Leadership styles, communication patterns and employer reputations can vary considerably between markets.

A profile that looks perfect from headquarters may make little sense locally.

And a candidate who initially appears unconventional may be exactly the person who understands how business is really done in that market.

That nuance is difficult to obtain from a database.

Central coordination still matters

At the same time, purely local search can create another problem.

The organisation needs consistency.

If a company recruits leaders in five countries, it should not end up with five interpretations of its strategy, culture and leadership requirements.

That is why we believe international search works best when two principles are combined:

A strong central point of coordination and genuine local search expertise.

The central partner protects the original mandate, maintains communication with headquarters and ensures comparable assessment.

The local partner understands the market, culture, candidate ecosystem and practical realities.

One search, two perspectives

We have experienced this in international assignments where a Belgian or European headquarters needed leadership in distant markets.

The value was not simply that someone could identify candidates locally.

The value came from translating between two realities.

What headquarters thought it needed.

And what the local market showed was actually possible.

That dialogue can change a search for the better.

International Executive Search is therefore not about making a Belgian search geographically bigger.

It requires a different operating model.

Mentorprise has represented Belgium within the ENEX international Executive Search network for more than a decade. Through International Search (ENEX), clients work with one coordinating partner while benefiting from owner-led Executive Search expertise in local markets around the world.
